Steaming or ironing a wedding dress: our advice

Is ironing a wedding dress a no-no?

Ironing a wedding dress may seem necessary to get rid of wrinkles, but there are major risks involved for delicate fabrics such as silk, tulle or lace. As an iron can damage, burn or distort these materials, ironing is often not recommended for wedding dresses.

Our advice for ironing in complete safety

If you still choose to iron your dress, here are a few essential precautions to take to minimise the risks:

  • Use a protective cloth: place a cloth between the iron and the dress to protect the fragile fibres.

  • Select an appropriate temperature: set your iron to a very low temperature, choosing a mode dedicated to delicate textiles.

  • Use light, quick strokes: to avoid damaging the fabric, don't leave the iron on one area for too long.

Why opt for steam crease removal?

Steaming is a much safer method of removing wrinkles from wedding dresses. Unlike ironing, steam does not touch the fabric directly, considerably reducing the risk of burning. This method is particularly suitable for delicate fabrics, and makes your dress look fresh without damaging it.

Using a steamer

For successful wrinkle removal, follow these tips:

  • Work in sections: target the areas you want to smooth gently, moving the appliance slowly over the creases.

  • Avoid sudden movements: be gentle and gradual to achieve impeccable results.

Cleaning your wedding dress

After the ceremony, it is important to clean your dress thoroughly before storing it. Professional cleaning is often recommended, to ensure that delicate fabrics are treated with care. If you prefer to do it at home, hand wash with a detergent for delicate textiles, on cold, and leave your dress to dry naturally.
