A practical guide to maintaining your portable steamer
Before diving into the steamer care steps, take a look at our instructional video. This video will show you how to clean your steamer using a simple and effective method using white vinegar. It’s a technique that removes limescale and cleans thoroughly.
Why maintaining your steamer is important
Regular maintenance of your steamer prevents the build-up of limescale and other deposits that could reduce its efficiency. As well as maintaining a good steam output, a clean steamer is safer and lasts longer.
Advantages of a well-maintained steamer:
- Optimum performance: a clean steamer generates powerful, consistent steam.
- Longer life: regular cleaning extends the life of the appliance.
- Savings: by avoiding frequent replacements, you limit costs.
Steps to clean and maintain your portable steamer
Items required:
- White vinegar
- Water
1. Prepare the cleaning solution
White vinegar is a natural, effective cleaning product, ideal for removing limescale and built-up residues. Fill your steamer tank with a solution made from one third white vinegar and two thirds water.
2. Switch the steamer on
Once the vinegar and water solution is in the tank, plug in your steamer and switch it on. Leave the appliance to heat until the tank is completely empty, which could take between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on the capacity of your model. The vinegar will dissolve the limescale, while the steam will disperse any remaining residue.
3. Rinse the tank
After using the vinegar solution, rinse the tank thoroughly with clean water to remove any lingering vinegar smell. Then fill the tank with clean water, run the steamer again and empty it to complete the rinse.
4. Clean the steam head
Deposits can also build up on the steam head over time. Clean it by wiping it with a microfibre cloth.
5. Repeat the process every month
For top performance from your steamer, carry out this care routine at least once a month, if you use your steamer regularly. For occasional use, cleaning every two to three months will be sufficient.
Additional care tips for your portable steamer
Don't leave water standing: always empty the tank after each use to prevent the growth of bacteria and mineral deposits.
Check the steam holes: if you notice a reduction in flow, inspect the steam holes and clean them with a soft brush.
